Federal Trade Commission - Know Your Rights As A Consumer

Your rights as a consumer are protected under the law.
  • How do you know if you're being treated fairly?
  • What should you do if you believe your rights have been violated?

The FTC Enforces Your Consumer Rights

There are 46 different consumer protection and antitrust laws administered by the FTC. The FTC doesn't handle individual problems encountered by consumers, but it will file an action against a company if a pattern of possible law violations is discovered.

Some of Your Consumer Rights

A partial listing of the FTC legislation that protects your consumer rights includes :

  • Credit Repair Organizations Act - prohibits organizations from making false claims about credit repair.
  • Equal Credit Opportunity Act - requires creditors to specify why you were denied credit, if you ask.
  • Fair Credit Billing Act - provides guidelines for individuals to resolve errors and disputes with creditors.
  • Fair Credit and Charge Card Disclosure Act - requires creditors to disclose specific information on all revolving credit statements.
  • Fair Credit Reporting Act - ensures your right to accurate reporting, limited distribution, and personal access to your credit report.
  • Fair Debt Collection Practices Act - protects your right to be treated fairly by debt collectors.
  • Truth in Lending Act - requires lenders and credit providers to fully disclose the cost of the loan or credit that they offer according to federal standards.
